Masters at Hanze

A Hanze Master is a practice-oriented, professional master's degree. In a practice-oriented, professional master’s programme, real-world professional practice plays an active role and applied research is a primary focus. Because you will not need to complete a transition year for our professional Master's, you can obtain both your Bachelor and your Master in five to six years. And if you are looking to pursue a master's while working, you can also opt for one of the part-time or dual Hanze Master's degrees. After completing a master’s programme at Hanze, you’ll have an internationally-recognised MA, MBA, MSc or LLM, just like a university master’s degree.

You are entitled to take part in one bachelor's programme and one master's programme. This means you will pay the statutory tuition fees for the master's, like you did for your bachelor's programme. There are exceptions to this: some master's are ‘unfunded’, meaning they are not subsidised by the Dutch government and may therefore have higher tuition fees. While such programmes are sometimes offered by public educational institutions, they are more often found at commercial providers. Hanze offers only funded master's programmes at this time. In many cases, you will need to pay additional fees on top of your tuition fees. These additional fees cover the costs of books, excursions and so on, and may differ from programme to programme. 

The registration deadline differs from programme to programme. Look closely at the programme you are interested in to see which registration deadline applies.

The major difference is that professional master's degree is practice-oriented and an academic master's is more theoretical in nature. In a professional master's programme, you learn to conduct applied research and in a university master's, you do academic research. A professional master's involves frequent collaboration with those in professional practice and you immediately apply what you have learned. Another difference is that you do not need to complete a transition year before enrolling in a professional master's, while in most cases this is required for an academic master's.

This is definitely possible if you choose a part-time or dual master's. These programmes have been developed specifically for people who want to work and study at the same time. And thanks to the practice-oriented and applied nature of a professional master's, you can immediately apply what you are learning in your job. 

This differs from one master's to another. Most full-time master's last 1, 1.5 or 2 years. Most part-time and dual master's programmes have a duration of 2 years, although a few last 2.5 or 4 years. Check the information on the master's you are interested in to see how many years the programme lasts.

No, you will not need to complete a transition year in order to be admitted to a professional master's programme. This means you can go straight from your bachelor's to the master's if you meet all the admission requirements.

Each master's programme has its own admission requirements. Most of the full-time master's programmes do not require work experience. Some of the part-time and dual master's programmes, however, do have an admission requirement that says you must have relevant work experience and/or relevant employment. Look closely at the admission requirements of the programme you are interested in, and contact the master's programme directly if you are unsure about anything.
